GCRTA Pilots National Rail Car Training Consortium Courseware

Posted March 2018

On February 26-28, 2018, technicians from Cleveland’s GCRTA piloted two rail car consortium propulsion and dynamic braking courses: Course 103, Inspection and Overview (one day) and Course 203, Inspection and Maintenance (2 days). For Course 203, participants spent the afternoons on the shop floor applying what they learned in the classroom that morning through hands-on demonstrations. Delivering instruction in their newest training room in their rail car maintenance facility, instructors Doug Schneider and Dan Tighe used Consortium courseware - PowerPoints, Instructor Guide, Participant Guides - and supplemented GCRTA materials with schematics, charts, and discussion to deliver great instruction. Doug and Dan also serve as subject matter experts on the Rail Car Training Consortium.

Class participants hailed from GCRTA’s equipment maintenance, motor repair, fleet planning and engineering and electrical departments, and included a rail car apprentice, mentor, supervisor, engineer. GCRTA provided hands-on instruction in the rail maintenance facility as well as from their new rail car shop training rooms equipped with a lab. Instructors ably applied the courses to the configuration at GCRTA.
