Apprenticeship Highlighted at ATU New Presidents’ Training

Posted October 2020

On Wednesday, October 26, Center Executive Director, Jack Clark, and ATU Workforce Development Coordinator, Jamaine Gibson, addressed a class of 24 new ATU local presidents and business agents on issues of apprenticeship and workforce development. Because of the ongoing pandemic, the session took place virtually.

Clark and Gibson’s presentation was part of a week-long training session for new presidents and business agents across the US and Canada. While ATU has a long history of providing training to new local leaders, devoting two hours of the training to discussion of apprenticeship and workforce development is relatively new. At the end of the training, several participants requested more information on apprenticeship programs.

Gibson and Clark had delivered a presentation last winter to a similar group of new union presidents and business agents at ATU’s Tommy Douglas Center. International President John Costa participated personally in the discussion following that presentation. President Costa’s appointment of Gibson to the post of Workforce Development Coordinator reflects an increased emphasis on the importance of workforce training as a key element of ATU’s approach to building the strength of its locals and the International. President Costa also serves as the Chair of the Board for the Transportation Learning Center.
